Being of Pakistani, Chinese and Spanish background, Montreal born Sofia Servando Baig struggled with her identity her whole life. It was while attending a private all girl Catholic high school that she rediscovered Islam & came one step closer with coming to terms with her identity.
Penning words of love and hope at an early age, Sofia’s words slowly began to change as she grew older. Frustrated with the world’s apathy and indifference to war, pain and suffering, she took it upon herself to use her voice to express her own struggles in life.
Now at the age of 20, Sofia is known for her passionate voice and truthful words, as a Spoken Word Poet, she aspires to instill in people passion, courage and confidence and above all Inspiration.
In just 2 short years, Sofia has recited her poetry at the ISNA (Islamic Society of North America) Conference which was held in Chicago, Toronto's MuslimFest and she also took part in the Muslim HipHop tour, "HipHop4Islam", all of which took place in the Summer of 2006 at the beginning of her Spoken Word venture which began in February of the same year. She has done shows across Canada & the United States including her hometown of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit, Milwaukee, North Carolina and has most recently traveled to Munich, Germany to recite her poetry, all the while attending University.
Aside from her poetry, Sofia is currently in University. She puts great importance to her family, friends & community that help shape who she is as an Individual, Woman & Poet. |
